Back to work & crime wave in Wynwood

This past week I began work on a new painting. It is a process orientated piece, so it take a week or so to prepare the panel before I will begin to paint. This week I plan to finish this new work as well as send out materials to prospective collectors. It should be a full week.
On Saturday, I attend the LegalArt lecture at Locust Projects with curator, Stuart Horodner from the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center. He gave an engaging talk for artists to help us advance our careers that was straightforward, honest, and direct. Afterwards, I did the gallery walk and checked out the various openings in Wynwood. Later that evening around 10 p.m. when I was at Hardcore Contemporary Art Gallery, two men and women came back to the gallery distraught, saying they had just been mugged at gun point. They called the police and 5 or 6 cop cars showed up. The gallery director told me this was the third incident that happened that evening. Apparently someone got their car stolen near Locust Projects a few blocks away. As for the third incident, I did not hear exactly what happened. Yesterday, I went online to see if there was any coverage about the Art District crime wave and came across this petition. So apparently the issue is not a new one. And if you think about it, the situation is not a surprise. Every second Saturday you have hundreds of well to do people who are usually a little buzzed from all the free alcohol and not really paying attention to there surroundings walking the streets of a blighted industrial and residential area where you literally have throngs of homeless people sleeping on the streets. So we must be easy targets to would be thieves. Unless more is done to provide additional security during the gallery walks, I am fearful someday something worst will happen. As someone who has just survived a needless tragedy a month ago, all I can say is I am glad no one was hurt this past weekend.As for some good news, the Border Cruiser made Miami NewTimes Best Of 2008 list. Thanks to Carlos Suarez de Jesus for his great story he wrote in the February 14th edition of the Miami NewTimes covering the project.
