A week of competition applications

I have been working this week on applying for a number of art competitions. The first was sponsored through the ArtCenter South Florida for digital art and the deadline was the past Monday. The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami deadline was the past Wednesday for film and video projects, and this Saturday, I attended a LegalArt seminar at the Miami Art Museum on how to apply for grants. I wish the seminar had been sooner as this would have really helped me to prepare for the two previously mentioned competitions. The seminar gave me a better understanding how these competitions work, where my strengths are, and where I need to make improvements. The difficulty that I find in applying for grants is that they take a good amount time and energy to process and offer no guarantees of any reward. I guess this is why I have strayed away from applying from them in the past. However, after the seminar I see where I have been failing and just in general how I can better improve how I present my work. Also this week, I spent a couple of days playing with my iMovie program on my Mac. I do not have a proper promotional short movie about the Border Cruiser and needed to develop something to present for the seminar on Saturday. So I spent Thursday and Friday trying to figure out the program to make a short 2.5 minute clip. Normally I work with a professional editor whenever I do this sort of thing, but necessity, time, and financial constraints inspired me to attempt my hand at producing a short film. The results were ok for a first attempt but I need a bit more practice until I feel fully confident with the program.
This upcoming week I plan to get back to painting and finishing the work that I started some weeks ago. This will be a nice change to staring at a computer screen and trying to figure out how to get the computer to do what I want it to do.
On June 19th, the Miami NewTimes ran the story about the tragedy that happened in Houston. On a lighter note, the paper listed the Border Cruiser in their Best Of 2008 list as best recycled squad car a few weeks prior.

Thoughtfully working and NewTimes story

This week I was busy finishing up the background for a new mixed media painting. As it took me almost 3 weeks to get it to this stage, I am contemplating the final image that I am going to paint on top of the surface. The initial idea seemed weak, and so I have been brainstorming what to do instead.
This week I have also been online investigating the works of Fluxus artist, Wolf Vostell and the Art Guys. Vostell's work I discovered in my visit to Berlin in 1999. I admire how early on he incorporated various media in his work. I have been investigating his work recently to see what he has done to make sure I am not rehashing what he already created. As for the Art Guys, I knew of them but was not very familiar with their work. A number of artists who I met in Houston know them personally and had even studied with them.
